A Journey of Growth and Possibility in HR: MSHRM Alumna Chelsea Thompson’s Story

- Author: Gabriella Barranta - Categories: ,

Chelsea Thompson’s journey into human resources began long before she officially entered the profession. Growing up, she watched her mother work in healthcare compensation, an early exposure that made HR feel dynamic, people-oriented and full of possibility.

When Chelsea began exploring majors during her undergraduate studies, she naturally gravitated toward HR. The more she learned, the more she realized HR is a field with a remarkable range, from recruiting and benefits to employee relations and strategic business partnerships. That sense of discovery ultimately fueled her decision to pursue graduate studies at USC Bovard College, where she found the confidence, community, and clarity to step into the HR professional she aspired to be.

“As I explored the field, I realized HR offered the flexibility to grow, pivot, and discover where my strengths truly belonged,” Chelsea said. “Pursuing HR allowed me to step into a profession where I could make a meaningful impact while continuing to grow into the person I wanted to become.” In this spotlight, Chelsea reflects on the origins of her passion for HR, her transformative experience in the MSHRM program, and the aspirations guiding her next steps as a strategic HR leader.

What initially sparked your interest in human resources? Did your interest develop over time?
My initial interest in Human Resources was sparked by my mom, who worked in healthcare compensation. Growing up, I remember thinking she sounded so intelligent on her work calls. When I began exploring potential career paths in college, I naturally gravitated toward HR for this reason. It was a relief as a college student to find a field that allowed room to pivot; I didn’t have to have it all figured out right away. As I learned more about how expansive the field was, from recruiting and benefits to strategic work, I became excited to explore the different avenues and discover where my true passions lay.

What was your career path before enrolling in the program? What do you do now?
Before enrolling in the MSHRM program at USC, I was already working in human resources at a law firm, with a focus on benefits administration. It was my first “big-girl” job out of college, and while I found the world of benefits interesting, I knew it wasn’t the area I wanted to specialize in long-term. That’s what led me to pursue a master’s degree in HR, to broaden my knowledge and better position myself to pivot into a more generalist role.

I truly believe that earning my master’s was the catalyst that helped me make that transition. It gave me both the credibility and the confidence to move into a more strategic role, which is what I do now as an HR Business Partner at Block, supporting our Sales & Marketing function.

When you were researching graduate programs, what stood out to you about USC’s MSHRM program?
First and foremost, what drew me to USC’s MSHRM program was the school itself. The Trojan Network is powerful and far-reaching, and the idea of being part of that community excited me. I was also drawn to how the program was designed with working professionals in mind. The curriculum felt modern, relevant, and well-rounded, touching on many areas I was eager to explore. It felt like a program built not just for today, but for the future, and that’s what sold me. The opportunity to learn from industry leaders and collaborate with other passionate professionals made USC stand out.

How would you describe your experience as an MSHRM student at USC Bovard College?
My experience as an MSHRM student at USC Bovard College felt like a whirlwind. The days, weeks, and months flew by, and looking back, it’s hard to believe how quickly it all went. Throughout the program, I felt fortunate to learn alongside such passionate peers. I always felt supported, encouraged, and challenged in meaningful ways. I look back on that time with nothing but gratitude.

Despite being a virtual student, I still had opportunities to engage with the campus community – attending football games, tailgates, and serving on the HRMA Human Resources Management Association to help enhance the experience for others.

Which professor had the biggest impact on your program experience?
Professor Durand Duin had a significant impact on my experience in the program. He was one of my final professors before graduation, and his influence helped shape the HR professional I am today.

He spoke so openly and fearlessly about his career journey, challenges, and growth; it was incredibly empowering. He saw potential in me that I often dimmed in myself, and he worked to bring that light out. The encouragement and thoughtful feedback he offered throughout his course is something I’ll always be grateful for. He pushed us to think critically, question the norm, and envision what’s possible.

What do you find most rewarding about working in HR?
The most rewarding part of working in HR is the opportunity to solve complex problems while directly shaping the culture, employee experience, and success of the organization. I deeply value the relationships I’ve built throughout my career and the impact I’m able to have on others. We often operate in the “gray,” and while that can be frustrating, it’s also a strength to be able to assess situations holistically and help chart a path forward. No two days are ever the same, and each new experience helps me grow into a better professional.

Where do you see yourself in the future?
Looking ahead, I see myself continuing to grow as a strategic HR professional. I’m grateful to be working at a company whose mission and values align with my own, where I can thrive both personally and professionally. I plan to continue building on my HR expertise through new credentials, projects, and hands-on experiences. Ultimately, I see myself succeeding in a role that challenges me, supports my growth, and brings me joy.

Is there anything else you’d like readers to know about you?
I love hiking, cheering on my favorite sports teams, trying new hobbies like crocheting, making pretzels, and practicing Pilates. I’m on a mission to visit every U.S. National Park in my lifetime, and I was once a contestant on The Price is Right! I’m always on the hunt for new coffee shops, and I enjoy experimenting with recipes at home. Lately, I’ve found real comfort and fulfillment in investing in my wellness through fun movement, intuitive eating, and a positive mindset.
