Michaela Ullmann

Michaela Ullmann leads the teaching and learning department at USC Libraries as the Head of Instruction and Assessment, spearheading the integration of information literacy instruction throughout the USC curriculum. For roughly two decades, Michaela has contributed significantly to the development of the Feuchtwanger Memorial Library, preserving Lion Feuchtwanger’s extensive 30,000-volume rare book collection and manuscripts by German-speaking exiles in Los Angeles, California. Her expertise in primary source literacy is further exemplified through her creation of a teaching platform designed to assist students, faculty, and fellow librarians with primary source literacy instruction. Additionally, Michaela has served as the Instruction Coordinator for USC Libraries Special Collections, where she has been instrumental in fostering a deeper understanding of primary source materials among a diverse academic audience.

Michaela holds an MA in cultural anthropology and archaeology with a focus on Mesoamerican cultures from the University of Bonn, Germany, and an MA in library and information science from San Jose State University. Her scholarly contributions include co-editing works such as Lion Feuchtwanger: Ein möglichst intensives Leben. Die Tagebücher (2018) and authoring articles such as “Kurt Enoch” (2015), underscoring her extensive involvement with and research on information literacy and German-speaking exiles in Los Angeles.
